Hatje Cantz continues its remarkable series of illustrated children's books - a program that not only conveys knowledge but also gives illustration a powerful stage as an art form. In children’s books, words and images meet in a way that allows science and imagination to unfold together, creating visual narratives that can only emerge when artists are given true creative freedom.
Working closely with authors, illustrators transform abstract ideas into accessible visual stories that spark curiosity and make complex themes intuitive to grasp. Illustration creates atmosphere; it emotionalizes, explains, organizes – and opens spaces that pure text often cannot reach. A beautiful example of this approach is LIFE (As We Know It) / 'Was wir über Leben auf der Erde wissen.'
“In the beginning – though there wasn’t really a beginning, because there wasn’t yet time - the entire universe was contained within a single tiny point …” With poetic language, the book recounts the formation of the universe, from before the Big Bang to the sweeping arc of evolution and into the present day – even...

Fideli Sundqvist is considered one of Scandinavia’s most exciting paper artists - an illustrator and graphic designer from Uppsala whose works are created with meticulous handcraft. From an early age, music and visual culture shaped her understanding of design. Album covers fascinated her in particular, and a linoleum-cut motif became a key moment that opened new artistic perspectives. After finishing school, Fideli moved to Stockholm, studying first at Nyckelviksskolan and later at the renowned Konstfack. In 2011, she graduated with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration.
During this time, she discovered her passion for paper as a material: first through delicate silhouette cuttings, later through complex three-dimensional paper objects that she builds and photographs. Her work thrives on the interplay of light and shadow, on precision and poetic ease. The transformation from two-dimensional silhouettes to immersive 3D worlds has become her unmistakable signature.

The Swedish illustrator Peter Gehrman c/o AGENTMOLLY & CO is known for his soft, almost airbrush-like style in which he explores themes such as relationships, memories, and our inner landscapes. His works often feel dreamlike, introspective, and at the same time carried by a subtle tension: people in moments of calm, surrounded by a world that never stands still – leaves and blossoms swirling around them, sharp lines of spaces and architecture creating both movement and stillness.
His recent publications include illustrations for FAZ Quarterly on the topic of crisis chat, works for POLITICO Europe about the precarious situation of the Roma community - among them a haunting piece on decades of forced sterilizations of Roma women and the fight for justice. For Svensk Natur he visualized the loss of glaciers, such as Okjökull in Iceland, as well as nostalgic reflections on a natural world disappearing beyond return. For Tidningen Vision he created color-intensive, almost grotesque motifs on health issues in the workplace.
Gehrman's works move between melancholy and hope, between...
