GoSee Book Tip : THE OPÉRA. Volume X presents new positions on the topic of nude photography – the anniversary edition by publisher Matthias Straub now appearing at Kerber Publishing and as a preview on GoSee

For the anniversary edition, the book has been reinvented to a certain extent, but still remains true to its bearing. For the first time, a male title motif examines the boundaries and definitions of masculinity and femininity.

Once a year, Matthias Straub compiles works by international photographers in the photo book The Opéra. The focus is on classical and contemporary interpretations of the human body, with all its facets, perspectives, expressions and interpretations. The opera serves as a metaphor for nude photography : the body at the same time a stage and dramatic performance. From a respectful distance, readers observe a sometimes reserved, at other times opulent, sad, or euphoric depiction of life.

This is the first time the book was designed by a woman : Christina Rollny (*1997) gave Volume X both an experimental and refreshingly young look. The book is divided into a classic and a contemporary act separated by an intermezzo. The classic act features several spreads of black & white photos with very sensitive observations of the human body, while the contemporary act is marked by extraordinary color.

Photographers of the Anniversary Edition include Evelyn Bencicova, Marius Budu, Markus Burke, Emanuele Centi, Jay Davies, Samantha Evans, Anna Försterling, Mia Macfarlane and Julien Crouigneau, aka French Cowboy, Katja Heinemann, Horst Herget, Kenny Lemes, Dorian Ulises López Macías, Shinichi Maruyama, Sara Mautone, Mariam Medvedeva, Henny de la Motte, Justyna Nerang, Hanna Pallot, Julia Radionova, Remi Rebillard, Red Rubber Road, Ryuta Sakurai, Tobias Slater Hunt, Wolfie Slowak, Gordon Spooner & Louise Rocard, Maxim Vakhovskiy, Sean Patrick Watters, Roger Weiss, Dimitros Yeros, and Lina Zangers.

When Matthias Straub went on a stroll through the book stores of Paris ten years ago, he noticed that there were many monographs by classic and contemporary nude photographers, but what they did not have was a compilation uniting the different perspectives of the topic. So the idea of creating an annual photo book series came naturally. But it was important for him to pursue the topic far from anything which could be considered obscene. The Opéra does not show explicit or unambiguously sexually connoted works, but instead presents a broad spectrum of sophisticated, artistic photography.

An anniversary event is taking place at Paris Photo at 6pm on Saturday, 13 November 2021. There will be a book presentation and a talk with Matthias Straub.
