By fragmenting bodies, architecture and nature, Bjerre-Poulsen reinvents the forms, i.e., circular and spherical elements, he observes everywhere around him as luminous images, creating intimate and enigmatic juxtapositions that invite each viewer to take a closer look and imagine what the image could suggest beyond the stillness of the frame. As an architect, Bjerre-Poulsen expresses his understanding of tactility, minimalism and detail by creating his still life series around the recurring motif of spherical shapes, rendering each image in finely graded black and white tones.
For Bjerre-Poulsen, the sphere is a perfect shape – an image that could be used to understand life itself. A strong symbol, it defines the most intimate of spaces; the womb, relationships between people, and that between man and God. The very balance of spheres makes nature mathematical and predictable.
Alongside the mesmerizing aesthetic of the photographic works, THE REINVENTION OF FORMS also includes interpretations of Bjerre-Poulsen’s practice by his close friends and collaborators, including an introduction by seminal Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa and a short fictional narrative by award-winning Danish author Thomas Rydahl. Hand-packaged, the book comes with a limited edition black & white print (32 x 24 cm, unframed) and is available in two different colors. The first edition is limited to 1,400 copies.
“I have a strong vocation for creating thoughtful projects that stand out in an understated, refined manner. For me, it is all about balance. Balance between richness and restraint, between order and complexity. Minimalism that acquires softness, and visual matter that assumes haptic qualities,” Jonas tells us about his work, which has won numerous international awards.
