“The minute you have a minute, you don’t have it anymore.” – This is how the journey began for the artist Coco Capitán, a native of Spain and a London resident, in the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, a train that doubles as a luxury hotel.
On the route from Paris to Venice, Capitán took the most instinctive approach – that of a curious traveller taking a trip with friends and not only as a photographer. Images range from playful snapshots to thoughtful moments of contemplation. Mindfully and consciously, she captures stewards as guests are welcomed aboard, landscapes rolling by, the opulence of the train’s carriages, its distinguished passengers and much more in her photographic portrait of the intimate ‘slow travel’ such a voyage on a train brings with it.
Known for restoring historic properties, the Belmond luxury hotel group is now collaborating with world-leading contemporary photographers to create bodies of work responding to their destinations, carefully pairing each artist with the personality of the chosen hotel. Coco Capitán photographed the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in spring 2023 and winter 2024.
Coco Capitán doesn’t like planes. Quite the contrary, she loves nothing more than traditional forms of transportation – in other words, sailboats, yachts, vintage cars and, of course, the archetypal train journey. So when Capitán was invited to photograph the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express – with its original carriages from the 1920s and historic routes throughout Europe – she couldn’t say no.
Capitán’s photographs and the series title remind us that, among all the glamour, the journey is just as important as the destination. Each moment should be cherished – no matter how silly or trivial it may feel – because this new reality is fleeting and will soon belong to someone else.
Born in 1992 in Seville, Coco Capitán is a Spanish artist and photographer. She studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where she received a Masters of Art in Fine Art Photography. Capitán is known for her campaigns for fashion labels such as APC, Miu Miu or Gucci, for which her unmistakable signature is infused into her artwork, often finding spontaneous expression and accompanied by introspection. Her work, combining photography, text, and painting, explores topics such as identity, consumerism and the transience of time. She has made a name for herself by blurring the lines between fine art and fashion.
