TOILETFOTOPAPERGRAFISKA - A Journey Through the Surreal and the Unexpected at Fotografiska Berlin
Welcome to ToiletFotoPaperGrafiska – the hypervisual, surreal universe of TOILETPAPER at Fotografiska Berlin. From May 10th to August 31st, 2025, the museum transforms into a place that defies all logic, showcasing for the first time in Berlin an exhibition by the Italian artist duo Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, who radically combine photography, design, and satire.
"It’s like being invited to the best party of your life, where everyone is wildly intoxicated and you’re the only sober person in the room," the artists themselves describe the experience. Founded in 2010 as a visually stunning magazine, TOILETPAPER has evolved into a global art project that has left a lasting impact on the contemporary art world. Their works break with the conventions of the censored, often sterile art world, relying on exaggerated, absurd, and provocative images that shock and fascinate.
ToiletFotoPaperGrafiska is an immersive collage where objects become artworks and images transform into installations. Visitors are invited to leave their minds at the door and instead follow their instincts. It’s not about understanding the “why” but about experiencing the “What the hell?!” A pool full of artificial bananas or a curated mess are just a few of the surreal elements that permeate the space, challenging the audience to embrace the illogical.
“We always strive to break away from the usual conventions and create a raw and personal dialogue between the viewer and the art. The exhibition at Fotografiska is full of hidden Easter eggs, images with invisible connections that we leave to the viewer to find,” says Pierpaolo Ferrari.
In an era where images are created and disappear in seconds, TOILETPAPER focuses on radical deceleration: Each work has been hand-produced in their Milan studio. This tactile approach is a manifesto against the superficiality of the digital world and a celebration of the power of the analogue.
