Kehrer Publishing has compiled the most exciting new acquisitions to put together one of the most significant collections of contemporary photography in Europe on the guiding principles of cooperation, dialogue and diversity for readers to enjoy with the haptic experience of an illustrated book.
The Art Collection Deutsche Börse is among the most significant contemporary photography collections. Ever since it was founded in 1999, it has been devoted to contemporary photography after the mid-twentieth century and now comprises over 2,300 works by roughly 160 international artists from 33 countries. The visual languages and photographic approaches represented are as diverse as the backgrounds, ages, or artistic methods of the photographers, ranging from documentary to conceptual approaches. Each position offers its own perspective on the collection’s central theme, the ‘conditio humana’, the exploration of the conditions of human existence and its position in the world.
Seven large-format photo books entitled ‘XL Photography’ have been published on the Art Collection Deutsche Börse to date. Nearly all works of the collection are featured in generous images alongside detailed introductions on the work of every artist. The XL Photography catalogues allow art lovers to follow the development of the Art Collection Deutsche Börse.
From the introduction by Anne-Marie Beckmann, Director of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation: “The range of topics explored by artists and reflected in their works, continues to grow. Caused above all by social and political developments and transitions, this spawns new visual languages, connected with an increasing sensitization for the views of the artists and the contextualization of the topics addressed as well as the greater inclusion of social groups previously marginalized. [...] In a continuous learning process, it is important to detect ‘blind spots’ while constantly broadening one’s own horizon. This can only be done through dialogue. It is, therefore, among the three guiding principles which are of such importance to us in 2024, the anniversary year of Art Collection Deutsche Börse, and have inspired our program: cooperation, dialogue and diversity.”
