Until the mid-1960s, Hans Werner Aufrecht worked in the Development department of Daimler-Benz. Together with Erhard Melcher, he founded the company AMG as Engineering Firm, Design and Testing for the development of racing engines in 1967. The acronym AMG is derived from A as in Aufrecht, M as in Melcher and G, the city Großaspach where the company was founded.
In 1999, he sold 51 % of AMG shares to the Daimler-Chrysler Corporation. That same year, he founded the company H.W.A. GmbH. And in 2005, meanwhile a Swiss resident, he sold all of his AMG shares.
