Iconic patron Rosi, ex-wife of Beatles discoverer Tony Sheridan, in DER HAMBURGER mag – portrayed with love by Oliver VONBERG c/o DOUBLE T PHOTOGRAPHERS

For the urban magazine Der Hamburger, Oliver VONBERG c/o DOUBLE T PHOTOGRAPHERS portrayed iconic patron Rosi, the ex-wife of Beatles discoverer Tony Sheridan, in her bar on the side street Hamburger Berg. Rosi’s Bar is one of the oldest bars on Hamburger Berg and is an absolute institution, and to this day, the living room of numerous musicians; or in the words of photographer Oliver Vonberg : “…with a very special and charming owner.”

Rosi (Sheridan) McGinnity, born 1941 in Hamburg as Rosemarie Heitmann, is a neighborhood patron in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district. She experienced the early history of rock ’n’ roll and the beginnings of the Beatles in Hamburg.

After attending school for eight or nine years, she first began working in a slaughter house at the age of fifteen. She then started waitressing in bars and discotheques on St. Pauli, including the Top Ten Club. Bruno Koschmider, the patron of the music club Kaiserkeller where Rosi tended bar, booked the band from Liverpool who called themselves the Beatles in 1960 – at the time unknown – to play in the basement of the club as the support band for Tony Sheridan (McGinnity).

During this time, Rosemarie Heitmann is described as an avid rock ’n’ roll dancer. She and singer Tony Sheridan became a couple, and in 1961, their son Richard was born. A child born out of wedlock was considered a scandal at the time, and the mother was denied welfare services. In St. Pauli, which developed into a red-light district in 1955, Rosemarie Heitmann and her son found shelter in a brothel. And from the age of one, the child grew up in the custody of her sister.

After Sheridan divorced his first wife, Rosi married him in 1965 and has since gone by the name of Rosi McGinnity. The couple separated shortly after in 1969. That same year, Rosi McGinnity took over her father’s bar Drei Hufeisen on Hamburger Berg, a side street of Reeperbahn.

Since its restoration in 1971, it has been named Rosi’s Bar and is operated to this day by Rosi McGinnity. Its interior is adorned by wood panelling as it was fifty years ago. The bar is still frequented by tourists, locals and celebrities alike.
