Today, Austria’s Salzkammergut region is influenced above all by tourism. It looks back on more than a century as a tourist destination, developed particularly thanks to its long tradition as what the Austrian’s refer to as ‘Sommerfrische’, the epitome of a recreational stay at a resort for urbanites in the countryside with a fresh summer ambiance. Emperor Franz Joseph I, for instance, was known to spend his summers at the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl, from where he governed his entire empire throughout the warmer months of the year.
For SALON Magazine, photographer Wolfgang STAHR c/o NERGER M&O took a trip to the Salzkammergut region together with designer, food blogger and author Alexandra Palla.
Salon Magazine : “Since her childhood, chef and fashion designer @alexandrapalla has spent several months each year in Salzkammergut. For our brand new issue No. 38, she showed us her favorite places, including local markets, restaurants, farm shops, guesthouses and bathing spots around Wolfgangsee💙.
The variety of regional dishes which can be found for example at @ausflugsziel_siriuskogl inspired Alexandra to write a cookbook all about ‘Sommerfrische’. At the boutique hotel @villaalma.lakeside in St.Gilgen, she occasionally serves dishes from the book, such as her Alpine ceviche.”
Alexandra Palla from Vienna is a designer and media entrepreneur. Since 2011, she has already published more than 600 recipes on her food blog ‘Rough Cut Blog’. In 2015, her first cookbook entitled ‘Put a lot of Love in it’ was published at Styria Publishing. In Spring 2018, she complemented her designer clothing line ‘PALLA VIENNA’ with a summery fashion collection made from traditional dish towel fabrics from Austrian linen manufacturers.
What else is there to do during the fresh summers of the Salzkammergut region? Go for a swim or do water sports at one of the numerous lakes, or go on a mountain tour, hiking, biking or horseback riding, visit cultural events, or even winter sports when summer is over – plus plenty of culinary attractions!
