BERLIN PHOTO WEEK – The big festival of photography, taking place 2–4 September 2022 at Arena Berlin and through 9 September 2022 at various satellite venues

BERLIN PHOTO WEEK is Germany’s big photography festival and is taking place from 2–4 September at Arena Berlin as well as numerous satellite venues. A special partner this year is the famous photography agency Magnum Photos, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary at BERLIN PHOTO WEEK. During BERLIN PHOTO WEEK 2022, a total of more than 50,000 visitors are expected.

“BERLIN PHOTO WEEK is turning photography and video – two main forms of communication in our everyday lives – into a hands-on experience : With everything from workshops and discussion panels, to keynotes and product demonstrations, interwoven with exhibitions and our interactive Funplaces, all fueled by innovative ideas and impetuses. Experiences for everyone who loves images – that’s what BERLIN PHOTO WEEK has to offer. It’s all here, whether inspiring art or individual creativity,” says Wolfgang Heinen, CEO of Berlin Photo Week GmbH.

The goal of BERLIN PHOTO WEEK is to spark enthusiasm for photography among the largest target audience possible: Active families and ardent photography fans, curious art & culture aficionados as well as young people from generations X, Y and Z. This year, Arena Berlin is the central event venue. Numerous satellite venues such as renowned galleries and institutions throughout Berlin, showing prestigious exhibitions, complement this comprehensive program.

BERLIN PHOTO WEEK is in many ways ‘The Ultimate Festival of Photography’: First of all, the event is a festival celebrating imaging trends such as the renaissance of analogue photography (AnalogueNow, Cinestill), AI-optimized retouching software (Radiant, Mylio), innovative sustainability concepts (MPB, Whitewall, CEWE), new full frame cameras (Nikon, Leica, Sony), creative printing solutions (CEWE, Whitewall, Kodak, Hahnemühle) or even the latest video tech (Sony, DJI, Transcontinenta).

What’s more, BERLIN PHOTO WEEK is a festival of photography culture, reflected in the numerous activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Magnum Photos. Benjamin Jäger, Art Director of BERLIN PHOTO WEEK : “We are very proud to be honored with organizing the official festivities in Berlin for the 75th anniversary of Magnum Photos – the most prestigious photography agency in the world, founded 75 years ago by world-famous photographers such as Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Alongside exhibitions by young Magnum photographers, including Nanna Heitmann or Yael Martinez, we have developed the exhibition and book concept ‘75 Years, 75 Photos’, which we are presenting at Arena Berlin, in collaboration with Magnum.” But the cultural fireworks of BERLIN PHOTO WEEK don’t stop there: The Helmut Newton Foundation is presenting the exhibition ‘Magnum Photos: The Misfits’ in its project space, while the show ‘Now: Magnum Photos’ presents the inspiring juxtaposition of iconic Magnum photos and the latest works by Magnum photographers at the Reinbeckhallen exhibition hall.

On display at the photo institution CHAUSSEE 36 are carefully curated works by Inge Morath in dialogue with photographs by Inge-Morath award-winner Johanna-Maria Fritz. The gallery Robert Morat is presenting a monographic exhibition by Christopher Anderson, and the Leica pop-up gallery, in turn, is showing the famous Muhammad Ali series ‘Champ’ by Thomas Hoepker. Buchkunst Berlin is presenting works by Thomas Hoepker, previously never before exhibited, and ‘f3 – freiraum für fotografie’ (Free Space for Photography) is presenting an event with Myriam Boulos.

Finally, BERLIN PHOTO WEEK is a festival of creativity with our numerous Funplaces at Arena Berlin, inviting all guests to photograph particularly creative motifs. And more than 40 workshops throughout Berlin demonstrate: The German capital is a photographic El Dorado with endless motifs to shoot. It is a place where stars of the photography scene present their famous photos in keynotes and conferences. In discussions on topics such as sustainability, further development of the market or philosophical photographic analysis, BERLIN PHOTO WEEK makes its contribution to the future of the imaging industry.

With its comprehensive program, its multifaceted cooperations and partnerships, BERLIN PHOTO WEEK shows just how cosmopolitan, inclusive and communicative the photo festival is.
