Why are drugs actually criminalized? Historian Dr. Helena Barop in conversation with presenter Thomas Haemmerli
If you wanted to buy drugs in the western world at the beginning of the 19th century, you went to the pharmacy. Today, if you want to buy drugs, you have to go to a dealer. Helena Barop explains how medicines became intoxicants, intoxicants became narcotics and narcotics became illegal drugs. The historian dispels prejudices and half-truths and uses numerous examples to illustrate this: The history of drug policy is a sequence of dazzling ambivalences that need to be re-sorted.
Helena Barop (*1986) studied history and philosophy in Freiburg and Rome. Her doctoral thesis “Mohnblumenkriege” and her book “Der grosse Rausch. Why drugs are criminalized. A Global History” (2023) are award-winning and much discussed. Barop lives as a freelance author in Freiburg.
