Designing photos down to the tiniest detail … – Stylist and texture specialist KIRSTEN BENOUFA on inspiration, perfect photos and new challenges in a short interview for you on GoSee.NEWS

After graduating from secondary school, stylist Kirsten Benoufa completed a one-year apprenticeship as a tailor at Steilmann and went on to study Communication Design with a major in Photography and Illustration at Folkwang University of the Arts. Since 1999, she has worked quite successfully as a freelance stylist. When it comes to textures, pigments and liquids, Kirsten’s reputation precedes her by miles. She is at home in the south of Essen, Germany, just a stone’s throw away from Düsseldorf. We present you one of her latest portfolios on GoSee.NEWS with a focus on texture, and we asked her a few questions about her work as part of our STYLIST SPECIAL.

What made you choose styling?
I studied photography and illustration, and I soon noticed that the arrangement and the materials are just as essential as light, the perspective, etc. It’s always been incredibly fun for me to design photos down to the tiniest detail. Which is how I got into styling, and I am still completely happy with my decision.

What fascinates you about your job?
The constant challenge! Every job is different, just like every material, texture, every plant… “I Can’t” has never been part of my vocabulary, and I’ve always been able to come up with a beautiful result for every photographic idea.

Where do you find inspiration?
In nature. I love looking at the beauty of plants. Everyone should find the time to take apart a small flower once and just be amazed by all the fantastic things they see.

How would you define good styling? Or, what makes your styling particularly special?
Perfect styling for me is looking at a photo and not feeling the urge to move anything, add or remove anything. That’s when I’m satisfied. Perfectly designing a photo with a few accessories takes much more expertise and good vision than staging an opulent image.

What do you like to work with most?
With things that are natural – flowers, branches and rocks whose beauty lies mainly in their imperfection. But also with colors, pigments and liquids which have laws of their own and always pose new challenges for me.

In 2004, Kirsten Benoufa chose Düsseldorf-based agency LIGAWEST as her representation. GoSee : ligawest.com
