"Joie Collective – Apprendre à flamboyer!" is a new exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris that explores the cultural forms of togetherness and the dynamics within groups that foster joy in our everyday lives. It brings together a diverse range of artists and initiatives from France and around the world, inspired by festive and social activities, as well as music, aesthetics, leisure, politics, and utopian ideas in public spaces.

The display features collaborative and communal projects based on the principles of cultural rights and social justice. "Joie Collective – Apprendre à flamboyer!" celebrates the ways in which we create together and organize collectively. With interactive artworks and a series of events, the exhibition becomes a space that encourages the participation and creative expression of both artists and visitors.

A significant work featured in the exhibition is Lorraine O'Grady's performance "Art Is..." which took place during the African-American Parade in Harlem in 1983. O'Grady responded to a comment made by an acquaintance who said avant-garde art had nothing to do with Black people. In response, she brought avant-garde art into the largest Black space she could think of: the millions of spectators at the parade. It was a bold move, as she did not know how the audience would react, but the performance was an unexpected and joyful contribution to the parade, challenging the art world and its relationship with the Black community.

The exhibition is curated by Amandine Nana, who has been with the Palais de Tokyo since 2023. She is also an author, poet, and researcher. With a background in art history and urban planning, she has an interdisciplinary foundation in the humanities and specializes in African studies and diaspora research. Her particular interest lies in the role of narratives, marginalized publics, archives, and collaborative practices in exhibition curation and beyond.
